After too Many Margaritas and a Convincing Phone Call...

a girl just might decide to put on her wedding dress - twenty plus years later (My girlfriend begged me to do it, then asked me to send photos. One in my prom dress, too!).

Now, I know what you all are thinking (Yikes)...

Why does she look like an old hag with flaring nostrils?

1. I took the picture with the intention of cropping my head - no need to smile, right (can't explain the nostrils)? And, since the photo was out of focus, I didn't send it to "said" person who convinced me to put the damn thing on in the first place (the reason I didn't crop it). Instead I sent her the first one. Lucky you. You get to view it in all its glory.

2. I had too many margaritas.

3. I am an old hag.

Period.

But, you have to admit, the dress is beautiful - twenty plus years later.

I think it's healthy to be able to laugh at yourself.

Life has been crazy the past few months. Good crazy. I've been busy with the house and hockey. Mom stuff.

I've also been doing some projects I've neglected.

Do you remember when I posted about my ugly bathroom a little over a year ago (here)? At the time, I wanted to take a sledgehammer to it. Remember? Well, for practical reasons, I didn't. After talking to a girlfriend, and doing a little research, I decided to paint it. Everything. I painted the hideous tile floor, the base of the vanity, the top of the vanity, and the fixtures - both light and faucet. To say it turned out fabulous is an understatement. I am thrilled with the results (so is my pocket book).

"Pumpkin Spice Latte" (To Die For)

I discovered the most delicious recipe for "Pumpkin Spice Lattes" last week. Lori, over a "A Time for Everything," was kind enough to share this masterpiece. Believe me, you will never want to spend five dollars at Starbucks again. This latte is amazing, and tastes just like the real thing (I've been making them daily. Pennies per serving.).

Ingredients:

2 cups milk

2 tablespoons canned pumpkin (NOT pie filling)

2 tablespoons sugar (can use substitute - I don't)

2 tablespoons vanilla

1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

1-2 shots espresso or 1/2 - 3/4 cups strong coffee (I use strong coffee)

Whipping cream - optional

Directions:

In a sauce pan, whisk together milk, sugar, and canned pumpkin. Heat until steaming. Remove from heat and add vanilla and pumpkin pie spice. Transfer to a blender. Blend for approximately 15 seconds until foamy. Pour into a mug (or 2 depending on size) and top with coffee. Top with whipping cream (I don't) and sprinkle with pumpkin pie spice.

*I kept 1/2 can of the pumpkin in the refrigerator for daily use. The rest I froze and will pull out once the refrigerated pumpkin starts to get low (One can goes a long way!).

Ever since I stumbled across these Christian Louboutin nude pumps, I have been obsessed. Completely and totally obsessed. I just knew they would be perfect with a nude dress - a feminine and flirty nude dress. Absolutely stunning, in fact.

Two weeks ago, while watching "Bachelor Pad," I spotted that perfect nude dress on finalist Holly. Ever since, I have been obsessed. Completely and totally obsessed. I want the shoes. I want the dress. Hell, I even want the legs.

Now, since I am the kind of person that can't get things out of my head, I went on an internet search looking for Holly's dress. The first thing I did was google "nude dresses."

As luck would have it, this is what I found:

For the past week, I have been decorating my house for fall/Halloween.

My color palette includes just three colors for a more cohesive look: orange (just a tad), black and white.

The inspiration for my mantle came from this page I pinned in Pinterest (via Heather - "Chicago Mom"):

I loved the idea of creepy moss and black crows.

I bought the white pumpkins, orange moss, and crows at Michael's. All items 50% off regular price. The vase came from Target.

For a little whimsy, I hung a skeleton in my powder room.

Isn't this fun? Target.

I bought the tombstone at Michael's. The luminaries I painted myself (Displayed on top of my ~~poison~~ wine cabinet.). Another simple idea I found via Pinterest (Click here for directions.).

They look great at night.

My girlfriend gave me this idea for a centerpiece - from Pinterest as well. Since I already had the bird cage, all I needed to do was buy the crow and pumpkin. The crow came from Michael's, and the pumpkin from the "Smith and Hawken" section of Target. Now, all I need is a black table runner. Anyone know where I can find one?

I changed out the treat jars. So festive.

Look at the luminaries in the background. Fun, fun, fun!

Cookies From Hell

A few weeks back, I joined Pinterest. I absolutely love it! It's a great way to get all kinds of wonderful ideas - just like the one pictured above.

For some time now, I have been looking for a new hobby. I was so inspired by all the adorable cookies I found at "Sweetopia" (via Pinterest), I knew I had discovered the perfect thing to pass the days. I was going to master the art of decorating cookies. In my mind, I imagined all the adorable cookies I would make and share with my family and friends. I dreamed they would call me the "cookie lady."

Well, two hours into my "new hobby," I realized, I needed a "new hobby."

This one sucked the big weenie.

The long process of cookie making was never going to work with my Type A personality. In fact, nine hours later, I successfully managed to bake/decorate only fifteen cookies ( I stopped at 15 because I couldn't bear it anymore.). And, they weren't done either. The first frosting needed to harden overnight before I could apply the second.

Honestly, I was so miserable after a day of sweating over fifteen cookies (the next morning, too), I decided I didn't want to share. These cookies needed their own special shrine. Like a shadow box as my girlfriend suggested. Or, in the least, a "waiting period." I needed time to show them off.

Well, who was I kidding. My son came home from school and woofed down two right away. Fifteen minus two equals thirteen. Thirteen left.

Then, shortly after dinner, my mister walks over to the cookies and says to me (rubbing his hands together):

"Can I eat one of these?"

"Fine" (said through clenched teeth).

To which he replies:

"You know, sometimes I just hate this house. I can't sit on the couch (Nope, I had just vacuumed it.) and I can't eat a cookie."

Later that evening, I had one of those moments where I realized how ridiculous I sounded.

The poor guy was right. He worked all day. Of course he could have a cookie and sit on the couch.

I felt bad. Really bad.

So, just for him, I made a special plate with one of my special cookies. Because, after all, I love my mister more than any damn cookie.

But...

they sure are cute!

Container Store + Cool Gal = Thrill Up the Leg

On Saturday, I made my way to one of my favorite places to shop: The Container Store. My shoes were in desperate need of some organization. They were shoved into hanging storage units that hung from my closet rod and were taking up way too much space.

While there, I discovered clear shoe boxes with lids. P-E-R-F-E-C-T for my shoe makeover. Even better, a case of twenty boxes costs only $30.00 (click here to see). Score!

Once I had found the perfect containers for my shoe storage dilemma, I decided to look around a little while longer.

As I browsed the store, the only thoughts that raced through my head were: What else needs organizing? Where else do I need containers? *sweating* Think, Cool Gal, think.

Before long, I stumbled into the kitchen section. The "mother" of all organizational possibilities. There were containers for the pantry, cupboards, and refrigerator. Tools to help organize your drawers, condiments, and spices. Honestly, the ideas for a "Martha Stewart" kitchen were endless.

I needed a place to start. *Baby steps*

Since my produce drawers were driving me nuts, I decided this was the area of my kitchen I would tackle first. I purchased food containers that would prolong the life of my veggies and set home to start organizing (Click here to see.). The thought of spending an evening de-cluttering and organizing sent a thrill right up my leg. After all, who needs foreplay when you can have clear shoe boxes instead?

So, I must know. Are you as weird as me?

Flashback Friday: Wedding Photos + a Flash Forward

It's hard to believe, but on August 2, I celebrated twenty years of marriage to the mister. It seems like yesterday, I put on my veil and walked down the aisle. As I reflect on that special day, I can't help but wonder: Where has the time gone?

For this week's "Flashback Friday," I thought it would be fun to include a couple of my favorite photos from our wedding day (Flash forward, too.). Keep in mind the year was 1991. "Beverly Hills 90210" was all the rage, "Everything I Do" by Bryan Adams was the number one single, gas was $1.12 a gallon, and George Herbert Walker Bush was President. For some of you, it might seem like a lifetime ago.

This is probably the first time in the mister's life he was surrounded by so many beautiful women. I'm guessing he was a little nervous. So cute. So young!

Flash forward:

Here were are on the evening of our anniversary celebration. We spent the day/night in Minneapolis and had a wonderful time. It's one of those moments I will remember for the rest of my life.

Speaking of moments I will remember for the rest of my life...

I can recall how much I was "in love" with the mister on our wedding day.

I love him just as much today as I did on that special day.

Probably more.

I just had to share my anniversary gift. The mister took me to Louis Vuitton and said I could pick out any bag. I chose the "Artsy." Love it!

Friend or Defriend? That is the Question.

Last year, I deactivated my FB account. I was sick and tired of people using the medium to jump on their soapboxes and lecture about everything from politics to pollution. I was also irritated by all of the bragging and boasting. I felt as though I was simply too old for that kind of sh$$. After all, when you reach my age, perspective is something you gain. Materialistic items become less important. Meaningful relationships take priority - relationships fostered on a daily basis.

Now, I know I could have "defriended" those schmucks who were clogging up my FB page - really, it was just one I found unbearably annoying - but for me, it was easier to kiss the whole thing goodbye. After all...

Well, silly me, I decided to reactivate my account as I missed some of the college buddies I reconnected with when I first signed onto "Fakebook." I missed hearing about how friends/family members were doing. You know, those who actually have/had meaning in my life. After all, isn't that the way it should be?

"Ok before I lose you again, can we set up a time to meet?"

Shortly after I reactivated my account, my college bestie (left) posted the above quote on my Wall. It almost brought me to tears as we were inseparable. I don't even know how we lost touch.

Then, last Sunday, I logged onto "Fakebook" to see what was up. This is the first thing that greeted me on my home page:

"Guess I better get this out there, if you think that 2012 is not going to bring out the most venom of any election I would love to get a hold of your hookah pipe. I am a liberal democrat and if you don't want to hear my opinion one quick way to eliminate it, unfriend me."

UGG...He's at it again (This is mild, too.)! He, as in the "schmuck." *see paragraph 2*

Just so we are clear, this post is not about whether or not you agree with his statement. I don't care if you lean to the left, right, or you're somewhere in the middle. I. JUST. DON'T. CARE. So, please, do not engage me in a political discussion. I like to keep those conversations between family members and friends.

What I am wondering, and what has brought me to write this post is what do I do? I can barely stomach his political rants. He's argumentative (Not with me. I don't bite.) and intentionally tries to pi$$ people off - obviously. Otherwise, why would he engage his "friends" in this kind of dialogue? Why can't he just keep it light?

Now, I am sure those closest to him would tell you he's a great guy. That's just him - very opinionated. But, you see, that's my problem with "Fakebook." I always feel obligated to accept friend requests from those who really only know me by name (like this schmuck). Why? Do you suppose it's because I revert back to my teenage years and worry about popularity? Or, worse yet, I worry I'll be perceived as a bitch?

I don't know...

Maybe it's because I'm "fake."

Let's Eat: Salsa Verde Turkey Burgers + Spicy Baked Beans

I posted this recipe about a year ago (here). It's one of my favorite "go to" burgers during the grilling season. I like to make my own salsa verde, but you can buy the pre-made in the jar. I, also, included a newly discovered recipe for Spicy Baked Beans. Easy to make and the perfect side dish. Enjoy!

Salsa Verde recipe from my FAVORITE Mexican cookbook "Mexican Cooking for Dummies:"

Ingredients:

3/4 pounds tomatillos, stemmed, husked, the stem scar cut out, and cut into quarters

3 serrano chiles, stemmed, seeded, and coarsely chopped

1/3 cup cold water

1 bunch scallions, white and light green parts, coarsely chopped (about 1 cup)

1 large bunch cilantro leaves and tender stems, roughly chopped (about 1/2 cup)

1 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt

Place tomatillos, chiles, and water in a blender or food processor. Puree just until chunky. Add the scallions, cilantro, and salt and puree about 2 minutes longer, or until no large chunks remain (It will look like this when it's finished. The extra you can eat with chips or slather on your favorite Mexican food. Yummy!).

Salsa Verde Turkey Burgers

Ingredients for burgers:

1 avocado, halved and pitted

1/2 cup mayonnaise

1 clove garlic, finely chopped (I used my garlic press and 2 cloves of garlic.)

Kosher salt

1 pound ground turkey (I used 1 1/4 pounds)

1/2 cup salsa verde (You can buy this or make your own.)

4 slices Pepper Jack cheese

4 kaiser rolls, split

1 cup fresh cilantro leaves, coarsely chopped

2 small green or red tomatoes, sliced

**I grill the burgers.

Directions:

1. Scoop the avocado flesh into a small bowl. Add the mayonnaise and garlic and mash with a fork until well combined but chunky. Season with salt and set aside.

2. In a medium bowl, combine the ground turkey and salsa. Divide the mixture to form 4 patties.

3. In a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat (I grill), cook the patties for 4 minutes on one side. Flip and top each with a slice of cheese; cover and cook for 4 minutes more.

4. Spread the avocado aioli on the split side of each roll bottom and cover with 1/4 cup cilantro. Top with a patty and 2 tomato slices; set the roll tops into place.

* The aioli is so delicious, I decided to spread it on the top bun, too. :)

Spicy Baked Beans

Ingredients:

1 pound dry pinto beans, northern beans, or navy beans

1 quart (4 cups) of cold water

1 cup chopped sweet onion (you can use yellow or white if sweet onion are not available)

1/4 cup think cut bacon (all-natural if available), cut into 1-inch pieces

1/4 - 1/2 cup sliced jalapeno peppers (fresh/canned jar) - I used fresh

1 cup water

1/2 cup molasses

1/3 cup packed brown sugar

1 teaspoon dry mustard

1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper

Salt - if you'd like

(Cook beans for two hours.)

(Saute onions and bacon)

(All ingredients in crock pot.)

Directions:

Pick over and rinse the beans. Place in a large pot or dutch oven with one quart cold water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, for about 2 hours or until the beans are tender. While beans are simmering, cook the bacon and chopped onion in a skillet until the bacon is thoroughly cooked and the onion is at least translucent. Remove the bacon and onions from the skillet and set on a plate covered with paper towels to absorb the excess grease. Once the beans are tender, drain the beans and place them in a crock pot. Add the onions, bacon, and remaining ingredients, stir, and cover. Cook on low 10 -12 hours (overnight) or on high for 5-6 hours. Stir before serving.

*I cooked mine on high for 4 hours and low for 2. They were perfect.

While reading Shape Magazine, I stumbled across something that really grabbed my attention: an app for your phone called "Fooducate."

What's so neat about this app?

It gives immediate nutritional information on foods (over 20,000) we purchase at the grocery store (I use it while shopping.).

Download the app.

Once the app is downloaded, a bar code scanner will pop up.

1. Scan your product.

(The healthiest boxed/prepackaged item in my house: Kashi Cereal)

2. Wait for the results.

The app locates the item and gives it a grade. It provides additional information on ingredients contained in the product (good or bad) and offers alternative choices.

My son's organic "Amazon Frosted Flakes" - not very healthy.

It's so cool and makes purchasing healthier foods (other than fruits and vegetables) that much easier.

*The tendinitis actually turned out to be a pinched nerve in my neck. Excruciating pain which radiates down my arm and into my thumb. I've had no more than three/five hours of interrupted sleep - per night - since last Monday. I went to my first PT session yesterday and have two more this week (on prednisone, too). I am hoping to feel better by Friday. Please bear with me as I try to heal. I miss you!

In celebration of the last day of school (yesterday), I thought I'd post a "flashback" of my last day of eighth grade. Remember, I was 14 years old. Immature beyond my years.

I Have a Big Boo-Boo

Well, Friends, it's official - I'm old.

What led me to this conclusion?

I picked up some "old lady" condition that has left me in pure misery since Monday night.

What condition?

Tendinitis/Bursitis (some kind of "itis") in my right shoulder (upper right hand quadrant).

It sucks.

Yesterday found me in such bad shape, I cried (wailed ) three times from pain. Unimaginable pain.

Nothing I did gave me any relief - Vicodin (prescribed to me), Ibuprofen, ice, heat, tearing my eyeballs out, nothing.

I paced around my house unable to sit, lay, stand. I couldn't drive, sleep (took a hot shower at 1:30 pm - the mister dried me off, and get this, put the moves on), or eat.

Today, I am happy to report, I am feeling a bit better.

I'll be by to visit you all sometime today/tonight (typing with one hand takes a while).

My First Weed and a Big Butt

I drank my first "weed" of the season Friday night. I mixed it with equal parts "Sweet Tea" ("Jeremiah Weed" or "Firefly") and water. I, also, added some lemon and a bit of sugar for the perfect drink. Very refreshing.

Memorial Day, we smoked our first "butt" using our "Big Green Egg." It tasted as good as anything we've ever eaten out. We put a delicious rub on the outside, then slow cooked it at 230 degrees for 18 hours (It went on the grill at 11 pm Sunday night.).

We topped our pulled pork sandwiches off with Jessica's Spicy Jalapeno Cole Slaw (OMG), and served them with a side of baked beans and corn-on-the-cob. Delicious.

So...

Is all this talk of BBQ making your mouth water?

Well, it sure is mine.

It's, also, got me thinking...

Why not host another "swap" the whole family can enjoy?

Just think about it?

Wouldn't it be fun to receive a bottle of barbecue sauce from another part of the country just in time for summer and the Fourth of July?

I know a northern girl like me would love to receive a bottle from one of my friends in the southern, western, or eastern parts of the country. It could be a lot of fun!

In fact, do you see that moist piece of chicken in the above photo? I brushed it with "Corky's Original Sauce" I picked up when I was in Memphis. On my ribs last week, I used "Oklahoma Joe's Cowtown Sauce" which I brought home from Kansas City. Delicious.

Please let me know what you think of my "swap" idea (I'm thinking around $5.00 for the sauce, $5.00 or less for shipping.). And, no, I'm not going to become "swap happy." This is it for a long time!

It had such an impact on me, I can still recall wearing maxi-pads in my underwear long before I got my period.

I think it was sometime around this age. Guess I felt I was old enough to menstruate, but obviously not old enough to understand "menstruation."

After all, how many girls able to procreate invite their neighbors to a "two person" parade while donning such attire?

I don't know if I'm waving small flags or banging an invisible drum.

I think it's the drum.

Let's Talk Pots ... Not "Pot"

It's that time of year.

The time of year when we break out our gardening gloves and start planting. I love this time of the year. Everything is new and beautiful. There are so many possibilities.

Possibilities?

Now, there's a word that sends my indecisive brain into a frenzy.

You see, every year, I struggle with what to plant in my pots. In years past, I've ventured away from my standard petunias, potato vines, and verbena, only to be disappointed with the end results.

This year, I am faced with the same dilemma.

Do I try new combinations, or stick with the same old "tried and true?"

I am open for suggestions.

About a year ago, when I first started blogging, I hosted an "OPI Swap." Well, it bombed, to say the least. I only had two friends who participated, which meant I only had one pair of partners for the swap.

Since I have a few more followers this year, I decided to give it another try as I think "swaps" are so much fun!

Let's Eat: Avocado Salsa

Avocado Salsa

Ingredients:

1 pkg. frozen white corn, thawed

2 small cans sliced olives

1 medium red onion, chopped

5 garlic cloves, minced

1/3 cup olive oil

1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice

3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon salt (I always add a little more.)

1/2 teaspoon freshly cracked pepper

4 medium ripe avocados

1/2 pint cherry or grape tomatoes, quartered.

Directions:

In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients except avocados and tomatoes. Refrigerate overnight to allow flavors to marinate (I don't always do this "overnight" step.). Just before serving, chop avocados and tomatoes and stir into salsa mixture. Serve with your favorite tortilla chips.

In other news...

I am so "egg-cited" over my brand new "Big Green Egg."

What an amazing grill/smoker!

On Friday night, we barbecued a cut-up chicken using the plate setter for indirect cooking.

Holy heaven, we've NEVER prepared BBQ chicken that good. It tasted exactly like something you'd get at a great BBQ joint - tender, moist, and juicy. In addition, the meat retained its original size and the skin didn't fry up. We couldn't stop talking about our meal.

Saturday night was steak night. Perfectly seared on the outside, medium on the inside. Absolutely delicious.

If you are in the market for a new grill, I highly recommend the "egg." Prior to purchasing the egg, we grilled on our gas grill or our Weber Performer (gas ignition system). In my opinion, neither comes close to the egg. It's a wonderful investment.

One last thing...

"Excuse Me, Sir, You Have a Hole..."

Do you know anyone who walks around the office with a hole in the ass of his pants?

I, do!

My mister, that's who.

He called me yesterday morning to tell me about a big hole he discovered in the butt of his pants.

My response:

"Well, are you going to come home and change?"

His:

"No, I just won't walk in front of anyone."

I. Am. Not. Kidding (I couldn't make this sh$$ up if I tried.).

Oh, yeah, did I mention he had a lunch appointment with a client? How embarrassing.

Just so you understand, the man has a closet full of nice clothes - beautiful suits, jackets, and pants. But, for some reason, he gravitates towards his crap. He tells me it's more comfortable. Really? Okay. I guess I can understand that to some degree, but I also know this man very, very well. And, I know, there are two other reasons for the "ass blowout."

The first reason is because he never throws anything away (even paper thin pants). Nothing (remember this post). There's even a photograph in his nightstand of some kid who attended his elementary school. When I asked him who it was, he told me he didn't know. Yup, it's still there. *See above photo. Oh, and sorry if it's you.*

The other reason, well, that's my fault. I enable. The man doesn't do any of his own shopping (says malls make him nervous). That means, if I don't notice something needs to be tossed (I'm not up when he gets dressed for work.), he'll just keep on wearing it.

Anyway...

Here are my two questions for you today:

1. Why can't men part with anything?

2. How come it's so hard for some men (mine) to buy their own clothes?

Fashion Friday: It's All About Lilly (and a little Kate Spade)

Now, as many of you know, Lilly unveiled her Summer 2011 collection yesterday. Let me tell you, ladies, I was literally squealing with delight. There are so many things I adore.

I picked some of my favorites and must-haves for this coming season.

This is the first outfit on my list. I. Want. It. All. The shorts, the shirt, even the necklace. Don't you think it would be perfect for a night spent grilling with friends?

This could work, too.

Oh, my, the print works in this style as well. I heart the seersucker shorts, but can't seem to find them on the site. I'll keep digging.

Let's Eat: BBQ Pork for Sandwiches

Here is one of the easiest recipes you'll ever find for pulled pork sandwiches. It's delicious, too. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

1 (14 ounce) can beef broth

3 pounds boneless pork ribs

1 (18 ounce) bottle barbecue sauce

Directions:

Pour can of beef broth into a slow cooker, and add boneless pork ribs. Cook on high heat for 4 hours, or until meat shreds easily (I cooked mine on low for 3 hours and high for 2.). Remove meat, and shred with two forks.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Transfer the meat to a Dutch oven or iron skillet, and stir in barbecue sauce. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes or until heated through.

The meat will look like this right before it goes into the oven.

I like to use Annie's BBQ sauce.

For me, no pulled pork sandwich would be complete without a dollop of cole slaw.

I whipped up a delicious batch using shredded cabbage, grated onion, Vegenaise, a little sugar, and apple cider vinegar (grating a little apple would be delicious too). Then I seasoned it with (gray) salt and pepper.

What's Vegenaise, you ask?

Well, just about the best tasting non-mayo mayo on the planet (better than regular mayo, I think). It's egg free, dairy free, cholesterol and preservative free. Which means, it's a heck of a lot better for you than the mayonnaise you are used to eating. Easy on the heart, too.

Give it a try. I promise you won't be disappointed (I use it in every recipe that calls for mayonnaise.).

I had a few bloggers ask about the bikini I was wearing at Dunn's in Jamaica. Well, here it is in all its glory - an adorable suit by Betsey Johnson (I bought it at "Everything But Water" in the Mall of America.).

You might remember, I did a post back in February about a couple of Vix bikinis I ordered. Well, they didn't work out as I looked like this:

Really, I did. My whole a$$ was sticking out. At first, I tried to convince myself they didn't look that bad (It's an age thing.). However, once the mister said to me,

"For Pete's sake, think about your son,"

I knew they needed to go back in the box.

So, I returned them and ordered another. That suit didn't work out either as I looked like this:

Minus the implants.

The moral of the story:

Always try a bathing suit on before purchasing.

Yesterday afternoon, two packages arrived from UPS.

Inside the first package was the Lilly coat I ordered last week. Look, there was even a little treat included.

(I just adore its 3/4 inch sleeves and slight flair at the bottom. *sigh*)

Inside the second package, which happened to be the first package I opened, was this sweet gift from my cousin (from this post), "Northern Girl." I can't begin to tell you how excited I was when I opened it as I searched high and low for these Lilly crackers and couldn't find a box anywhere.

When I was in third grade, my family took a vacation to Disney World with her family. We drove all the way from Minnesota to Orlando. Along the way we stopped and visited all kinds of different US destinations. It was a very special time and one I will remember for the rest of my life (Her mother passed away three years later. We didn't spend much time together after she died - many changes. It still makes me sad.).

Here we are at Cypress Gardens. "Northern Girl," only one year older (almost to the date), looks like a giant next to me (her words, not mine). Funny thing is, we grew-up to be just about the same size.

How to Be a Good Wife

Please don't shoot the messenger.

Below is an excerpt taken from a 1950s high school home economics textbook. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal on time. This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospect of a good meal is part of the warm welcome needed.

Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest up so that you'll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your makeup, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh-looking. He has just been with a lot of work-weary people. Be a little gay and a little more interesting. His boring day may need a lift.

Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the home just before your husband arrives, gather up school books, toys, paper, etc. Then run a dust cloth over the tables. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will will give you a lift too.

Prepare the children: take a few minutes to wash the children's hands and faces, comb their hair and if necessary change their clothes. They are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part.

Minimize all noise. At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer, dishwasher, or vacuum. Try to encourage the children to be quiet. Be happy to see him. Greet him with a warm smile and be glad to see him.

Some don'ts: Don't greet him with problems or complaints. Don't complain if he's late for dinner. Count this as a minor problem compared with what he might have gone through that day. Make him comfortable. Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or suggest he lie down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him. Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soft, soothing and pleasant voice. Allow him to relax and unwind.

Listen to him: You may have a dozen things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first.

Make the evening his. Never complain if he does not take you out to dinner or to other places of entertainment. Instead, try to understand his world of strain and pressure, his need to be home and relax.

The goal: Try to make your home a place of peace and order where your husband can renew himself in body and spirit.

To Heck With the Weather, I've Got Alcohol and a Wonderful Cause

Yesterday morning, a box was delivered to me from Federal Express. On the outside of the box was this label (Good sign, my friends. Good sign.).

Inside the box was this package.

Inside the package was this present.

You see, Stephen Mitchell, of flipflop wine, contacted me (Thanks Tammy) to see if I would be interested in doing a review. Yes, yes, and yes (*No arm twisting necessary.*)!

Stephen sent me a bottle of pinot grigio and a bottle of riesling. My plan is to drink one bottle at a time, then write my review. I think I'll begin with the pinot. Since I don't usually drink on weekdays, I will have to write my review next week.

Before I leave today, I wanted to share with you something extraordinary about flipflop wine:

The company has partnered with an organization called "Soles4Souls."

This partnership is very important. With more than 300 million children in the world without shoes, flipflop's dedication to the cause is helping put shoes on more than 100,000 feet (For every bottle of wine purchased, "Soles4Souls" will distribute a pair of shoes to someone in need. Up to 100,000 pairs in the first year.).

The reality of life for many individuals in developing nations is that having a pair of shoes is a rarity. It is not uncommon for children to grow up in these areas without ever having a pair of shoes at all.

Shoes are very often considered a required part of the school uniform in developing countries and without shoes, many children are unable to attend school.

In addition, many serious health conditions can be absorbed through the feet, even through the toughest soles. With the number of children living in abject poverty and therefore surviving at a scavenger's existence, the feet are at tremendous risk as the child hunts for food or household items in garbage dumps, abandoned housing/construction areas, or while crossing through open sewer trenches and contaminated areas.

A child's bare foot is particularly at risk of infection by hookworm. Especially at risk are children living in African and Southeast Asian countries, where hookworm infections are about 60 times more common.

Let's Eat: Greek Salad

When I'm in the mood for something lighter, I usually make this salad. It's delicious and easy to prepare (I added a link below so you can print the recipe. Thanks for the idea, Daphne! Yay!).

Greek Salad

Ingredients:
6 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons kosher salt plus more to taste
1 cup extra-virgin olive oil, preferably Greek (I don't use Greek.)
2 teaspoons minced fresh oregano
Freshly ground black pepper
1 head romaine lettuce (about 1 pound - I used more), trimmed of tough stems and torn into bite-sized pieces
6 ounces kalamata olives, about 1 cup
1/2 pound Feta cheese, crumbled
1 English cucumber, trimmed, cut into 1-inch chunks
12-ounces vine-ripened cherry tomatoes, halved
1 small red onion, cut into 1/2 inch wedges, soaked in cold water for 5 minutes and drained
1 green pepper, trimmed, seeded, and diced

Directions:
In a small bowl, whisk together the lemon juice, garlic, salt, and olive oil. Stir in the oregano and pepper, to taste. Set aside (can be made ahead).

In a large salad bowl, combine all the remaining ingredients. Toss with some of the dressing. Serve and pass the remaining dressing at the table.

"Callahan Shorts" - Another Reason to Love Lilly

Can you believe I had a post all ready about the Lilly Pulitzer "Callahan" shorts when this popped up in my email? How ironic.

I just love the "Callahan" shorts. I own quite a few pairs in both the solids and prints. My favorite way to wear the prints (like my new pair in the above photo) is with a Gap ribbed tank. Perfect for a smoldering hot day.

Just before I left for paradise, I purchased this pair of green "Callahan" shorts and this top. I wore it one night and even put my hair up the same way (Well, kinda). I can't begin to tell you how much I adore this ensemble. I have the cutest earrings and the perfect Lilly wedge. *sigh* So pretty. So fresh.

Well, I am off to order the red pair. I am contemplating a few of the other pairs, too.

Why?

In Labadee, the guide who took my son and me out on a paddle boat asked a question. I couldn't understand what he said (heavy accent), so I smiled and replied, "No." He sort of looked at me funny and smiled back.

My son then turned to me and said, "Mom, he just asked you if you liked your cruise."

Good lord.

Next time, I will just smile even if I have no idea what's going on! :)

All Aboard the Allure - Spring Break 2011

I just returned home from my spring break vacation aboard the "Allure of the Seas." It was absolutely incredible. The ship was truly amazing and something you have to see to believe. In fact, I loved it so much, I am already in the early planning stages for next year's trip.

There were a lot of wonderful things I experienced while on vacation. For example:

I acted like a kid,

made new friends,

looked like a "dorky" tourist,

took a lot of pictures,

hung out at a beautiful beach,

saw some fantastic shows,

did a little snorkeling (Can you find the eel?),

(the mister and my son)

(feeding the fish)

(cool image)

drank a Corona in Mexico,

went zip lining in Jamaica,

(Yep, I'm pretty sure I'll never do it again.)

climbed the Dunn's River Falls,

(fun, fun, fun)

drank a Red Stripe,

ate A LOT of fantastic food including sushi one night (all three of these rolls plus one more - 4 in one night),

enjoyed the breathtaking beauty of the islands,

(Jamaica)

(Labadee, Haiti)

(Jamaica)

went for a run every morning (lifted weights in the beautiful gym, too),

and played a little golf.

(Boardwalk at night)

BUT, above all, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment I spent on this beautiful ship. It's indescribable. Every "i" was dotted, every "t" was crossed.

(Do you see the Aqua theatre at the back of the ship? We saw a fantastic diving show one night.)

I loved Central Park,

(a beautiful park right on board with upscale shops and restaurants),

the wine bar (yes, please),

and the Royal Promenade (our room over looked this area).

(great pizzeria and Starbucks)

(Bow & Stern - cute Irish Pub)

I marveled at the details,

(lovely beaded dressed between the elevators)

(gorgeous)

sunned by the pools,

and watched UConn and Kentucky under the stars.

Okay, so enough of the photos (I have about 200 more.). If you've ever considered cruising, I highly recommend "Allure of the Seas" and Royal Caribbean. It was my first time aboard this cruise line and I can't say enough positive things about the food, service, cleanliness, and overall experience. It was a wonderful vacation and one I will treasure for years to come.

I would like to leave you today with a big "thanks" to Daphne and Kelly. I truly appreciated their help while I was away. I, also, enjoyed their posts and was touched by their lovely comments.

**The mister and I successfully snuck the vodka on board. However, I only had two packets the entire week (mister, too). What can I say, I'm a wine girl! I enjoyed a glass of vino every night either before or with my meal. Want to hear something funny... I was able to get the vodka on board, but had my salsa and vanilla confiscated at the airport. Dumb me... I completely forgot about the whole "3 ounce" thing. Oh well, someone in Florida is making damn good cookies and enjoying chips with my salsa! Bahahaha....

My son can't stand it when I post photos of him on my blog. For the most part, I respect his wishes. However, this is just too cool (He spent most of his time trying to master the Flow Rider. Pretty good for a Minnesota boy.). It might come down later today.

Hello ladies. Thanks for stopping by while Cool Gal is on vacation having the time of her life, vodka packets and all.

She asked me (Kelly - aka K-jo) to be a guest blogger. A little background on how I met her -- it was in 7th grade (where we traded clothes for the day and curled our hair again just in case it got flat from the 15 minute bus ride to school and applied more makeup in the bathroom before school started). Needless to say, we've been friends ever since. We've had a lot of fun times and laughed a lot over the years. I would count her as one of my dearest friends.

So, here goes my attempt at blogging...

The other day I was thinking about the mess in the basement, how my closets and cupboards are not neatly organized, my walls need some touch ups, holes need to be filled, pictures need to be dusted, grout cleaned, etc., I think you know what I mean. Those tedious projects that need to get done from time to time. The ones you save for last.

After not thinking too deep, I knew exactly what the problem was. The TV. Yep, too much TV. Then I dug not too much deeper and realized the shows I watch most, are (GASP) reality shows. I used to roll my eyes when I would hear my co-workers and friends talking about those shows. I really liked dramas and documentaries back in the day. Now, could it be true that I am one of them?

Let's take a look.

The Amazing Race (originally Cool Gal's suggestion)

Project Runway (love to watch them whip up an outfit so quickly)

The verdict: guilty! I think I CAN say it's so. I am a reality TV show Junkie. I guess there could be worse things. But I'm certainly glad that spring and summer are around the corner so I can get off the couch and out the house!

Last week, I shared with all of you my genius plan of dyeing vodka light blue and pouring it into empty mouthwash containers as a way of sneaking it into our luggage for our spring break cruise. Remember (here)?

Well, my mister shared this idea with a good friend of his who lives in Tampa (We'll call him "Sizzle" because that's what those two fools call each other.). Sizzle immediately told my mister to call me up and tell me to stop production. He had a much better way for us to get booze on our cruise. He, also, told my mister it's the only thing he uses when he cruises.

Seven days after the phone conversation (yesterday), a package arrived UPS from Sizzle to Sizzle. I know. I know. I told you they were fools.

Anyway, last night, my mister and I opened the package. Inside it were two "Ms. Behavin" vodka pouches like the one in the above picture. Inside the pouches were twenty-five individually packaged "portion" controlled pouches. Each pouch contained one shot (50 shots for the mister and me!). Perfect.

The shots are packaged together by perforated edges and tear apart easily. According to Sizzle, it's best to do this before you leave and shove the shots in your shaving kit, socks, make-up bag, etc (I guess the cruise Nazis are less likely to find 'em!). Done. Check.

How cute are these little shots? Pink and green, too!

Even though I am not a big vodka drinker, I know I will enjoy an occasional drink as I sail away from this fifteen degree weather. Perhaps a vodka/lemonade because the lemonade is free!
